16 LC DBM New Home Sales Numbers Revised Construction Backlog Sets Record Return to Positive Territory for Existing Home Sales With January's numbers having been revised up, the 0.6% drop in new home sales in Febru - ary means the overall total is about where it was expected. Compared to last year, sales are up 2.2 percent. Also up was the supply of homes for sales – the most since 2009 - though the majority of the increase came from homes on paper or under construction, not completed units. Last year's final quarter saw the highest level ever for the Associ - ated Builders and Contractors' Construction Backlog Indicator, which expanded 2.25% from the previous quarter to come in at 9.67 months. "Construction spending is set to be elevated this year under virtually any conceivable scenario," says ABC chief economist Anirban Basu. Following two monthly declines, existing home sales rebounded with a 3% rise. The single-family category was the big winner as its 4.2% gain more than made up for the 6.5% drop in multifamily sales. The Wells Fargo Economics Group reported that numbers were impacted by low supply, down 8.1% from last year, though it was up 4.6% from last month. Lowest Construction Jobless Rate for Month Registered At 7.3%, the unemployment rate for construction workers was the lowest national January rate ever recorded. And, the Associated Builders and Con - tractors analysis of U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics found that estimated figures were down in all 50 states year-over-year, accounting for 233,000 more workers on the job than this same time last year.
