March 2018 51 I n f o r m a t i o n R e q u e s t # 4 4 7 In California, the Redondo Beach City Coun- cil, citing noise complaints from residents and air quality degradation, instructed the city attorney to add a ban on gas-powered leaf blowers to the city's noise ordinance. Fines would be $100 for the first ticket, $200 for a second and $500 for a third within a year. The current restrictions allow their use between 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. weekdays and 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturdays. The amendment will reportedly be taken up by the City Council at least twice for approval before it's enacted. A proposed check on gas powered leaf blower use in Greenport Village on Long Island, New York, had supporters and detractors at a public hearing recently where a petition for a complete ban was presented. However the proposal heard at the hearing only restricts their use to weekdays between 8 a.m. and 5:30 p.m., Saturdays between 10 a.m. and 5 p.m., and Sundays and holidays between noon and 4 p.m. from March 15 to April 30, and Oct. 15 to Dec. 15. An East Hampton Village, New York, board member has suggested completely banning the use of gas-powered leaf blowers from June 1 to September 15 and met with local landscapers to discuss the issue. Currently, their use by profes - sionals are permitted on weekdays from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., and on Saturdays from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. between June 1 and the second Friday in December except for federal holidays. The board member did however express his desire that the in - dustry self-regulates to reduce complaints and prevent a ban from happening.
