50 LC DBM The University of Tennessee Knoxville and the University of Kentucky are asking anyone who lives in an area forested with American chestnuts, elms, ash, white oaks, or hemlocks to help their researchers study what makes some trees susceptible to pests or diseases and others resilient. By download - ing the free TreeSnap app, users can upload an image of a tree and its approximate location (within a 5 mile radius to protect user privacy) so the researchers may study it. By creating a highly detailed computer model of a neighbor- hood in Vancouver, Canada, researchers from the University of British Columbia simulated what would happen if all or some of the trees in said neighborhood were removed. The study found that removal of all trees could double the wind speed of an area as well as drive up energy consumption thanks to the increase in wind pressure. Bare trees are just as effective as evergreens at moderating airflow and wind pressure, however. Universities Partner to Release TreeSnap App UConn Creates Sustainable Plant and Soil Systems Major Urban Trees Have an Impact on Weather A group of turfgrass entomologists, research and exten- sion personnel, and integrated pest management practitioners worked together to review existing scientific literature regard - ing neonicotinoids in turfgrass, develop best management prac- tices for mitigating risk and enhancing pollinator habitats and health, and prioritize future research needs. Recommendations include mowing turfgrass areas before applying pesticides, us - ing a granular application where possible, and increasing and preserving pollinator habitat. Students will choose a concentra - tion in turfgrass science, environ- mental horticulture, or sustainable agriculture. Regardless of their chosen emphasis, students will learn how to ensure soil health, responsibly manage fertilizers, run - off and water usage, and control invasive plants and pests.
