32 LC DBM I n f o r m a t i o n R e q u e s t # 4 4 3 I n f o r m a t i o n R e q u e s t # 4 1 3 EPA Administrator Scott Pruitt signed an order denying a petition that would continue to prohibit some use of chlor - pyrifos, a broad-spectrum insecticide that was partially banned in 2001. It was introduced in 1965 and goes by various trade names: Dursban, Lorsban, Bolton Insecticide, Nufos, Cobalt, Hatchet and Warhawk. One of the insecticide's uses is to control mosquitoes, ticks and mites on turf. Challenges to the EPA's decision have been filed in New York, California, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Wash - ington and Vermont. As work activity hits it peak this sum- mer, and you are faced with schedul- ing decisions such as whether to apply pesticides now or when work slows down, research reported earlier in the Horticultural Research Institute's Journal of Environmental Horticulture about how to increase the effectiveness of herbicides applied in cooler temperatures, which scientists agree generally does not work as well as warm- weather applica - tions, can help you make those choices. https://tinyurl. com/y98dywjd The Weed Science Society of America is polling its members to find out which weeds are the most troublesome and the most common among various types of plants. The first survey yielded a list of weeds for fruits, vegetables and broadleaf crops. The next one will focus on weeds in turf, followed by one on weeds in aquatic environments, natural areas and other settings. http://wssa.net EPA Reverses Ban on Chlorpyrifos The Impact of Temperature on Herbicide Activity Most Wicked Weeds in the U.S. Being Identified PHOTO COURTESY OF USDA NRCS PHOTO COURTESY OF USDA NRCS
