Although drought conditions, and lawn-watering
restrictions, capture headlines, the latest drought
monitor indicated that almost two-thirds of the con-
tiguous U.S. is experiencing no drought at all, so here
are some perspective-shifting updates.
A team of Penn State researchers recently discovered that the cause of an emerging
turfgrass disease known as thatch collapse is Sphaerobolus stellatus, better known
as artillery or shotgun fungus. Common in bark mulch but previously not seen in
grass, it decomposes lignin in thatch. There is no known treatment to eliminate it
but this research is seen as the frst step towards doing so.

a month.
